Frequently Asked Questions

Is WAP a part of a government agency?

WAP is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit. Some of our grant funding that we receive come from government entities on the regional, state, and federal level. We also have strong partnerships with several government agencies to support wildfire mitigation implementation on private lands, but we are not a part of a government agency.

Where does WAP funding come from?

WAP is nearly 100% funded by grants from the federal, state, and county level, as well as grants from private foundations. The rest of our funding comes from generous donations from our community members and partners. This means that program availability can vary from year to year as funding priorities and grant geographies change. WAP continuously seeks grant funding to continue to do wildfire mitigation. You can support our work here.

Does WAP do the mitigation work?

No. WAP serves to provide free home site assessments, which are the first step of a cost share project. After a wildfire risk site assessment, homeowners can get bids from local wildfire mitigation contractors to perform the scope of work. WAP can potentially reimburse these bids up to 40-60% of the project costs from contractors, depending on grant funding availability.

Will mitigation work help with homeowner insurance?

There is unfortunately no direct correlation between insurance companies and wildfire mitigation activities. The science proves that performing wildfire mitigation on your property will increase the chance of survival of that structure when (not if) wildfire comes through the landscape, but there is no guarantee that insurance companies will consider this when offering insurance plans.

Can you write a letter/certify my home for home insurance purposes?

Once a cost share project has been completed and the scope of work has been fully executed, homeowners may request a letter that could be used for insurance purposes. The letter will state when and where the mitigation work was done and that the work meets CSFS HIZ Guidelines at the time of the final inspection. WAP does not "certify" a home or make any sort of guarantees about whether or not a home will survive a wildfire after mitigation work has been performed.

Who will see the site assessment report?

The report done by WAP coordinators is for the homeowners and to be used by the homeowners at the homeowner’s discretion. These reports are useful in determine wildfire mitigation needs but will not be circulated to any other organizations or agencies. Contact your coordinator for more information here.

How many assessments do you do in a year?

As an organization, WAP performed 281 site visits in 2024 across 3 counties. You can read more of what we did here.
